Somatic Experiencing Therapy
"The Goal to treatment (of trauma) is to find a way in which people can acknowledge the reality of what happened without having to re- experience the trauma all over again" Bessel van de kolk MD.
What is Somatic Experiencing®(SE)?
Somatic Experiencing® is a body-awareness approach to trauma therapy being taught throughout the world. It is the result of over forty years of observation, research, and development by Dr. Peter Levine, based upon the realization that human beings have an innate ability to overcome the effects of trauma.
Trauma dis-regulates the nervous system. This dis-regulation in the nervous system leaves us overwhelmed by things that we used to handle easily or even enjoy. We can reclaim our ability to handle the demands of life by learning to connect to the innate balance that's been overridden.
In Somatic Experiencing working slowly is the fastest way in order not to re-traumatize oneself. As we move towards balance, we find we sleep better, breathe deeper, and have more desire and less fear of engaging with the world. It is a co-operative and manageable process. We can work with emotions, symptoms or a story. Working with trauma does not necessarily require memories or details about the trauma.
I graduated with an advanced certificate from the Somatic Experiencing® training in San Francisco. I incorporate elements of S.E. into my psychotherapy work and I also see clients solely for SE.
I invite you to contact me at Therapy San Francisco, for a complementary phone consultation at 415-890-6394.
